The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has given approval for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s recommended alternative for reconstructing I-94 in Milwaukee County.

With the FHWA’s authorization, the East-West project can now advance into final design and construction.

The selected alternative to improve the urban stretch of I-94, between 70th Street and 16th Street in Milwaukee, includes modifications to interchanges to eliminate left-hand exit and entrance ramps, changing the Stadium Interchange to a diverging diamond interchange, and reconstructing the full corridor with four lanes in each direction. All improvements are subject to future funding allocations. Utility work and project construction are scheduled to begin in late 2025.

The final study document will be available early next week at https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/projects/by-region/se/94stadiumint/info.aspx.
