A former construction worker and son-in-law of the country’s transportation secretary announced his bid for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District.
Michael Alfonso, 25, on Wednesday announced he would run for the 7th District and described himself as a “pro-Trump conservative.” The young candidate said he would address issues such as the cost of living and noted his experience working in construction, according to his campaign website.
Alfonso is married to Sean Duffy‘s daughter, Evita. Duffy was confirmed as President Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. secretary of transportation and held the 7th District seat from 2011 to 2019.
Rep. Tom Tiffany represents the 7th District and will run for governor in 2026. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, announced he will not seek re-election.
“I was born and raised with the traditional Wisconsin values of faith, community and hard work, and now I’m ready to give back to the area that gave so much to me,” Alfonso said in a statement. “I’ve watched as the American dream has continued to slip away from the people who so deserve it. I’ve seen the effects of higher taxes and the increased cost of living on our families and our farms, and the erosion of our constitutional rights.”
According to the campaign website, Alfonso paid for college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison by “putting on boots and working 10-hour days building houses, paving roads and laying concrete.”
Two other Republicans announced their candidacy for the 7th District: Paul Wassgren, a businessman and attorney in Ashland, and Jessi Ebben, who previously ran for the 3rd District.
Christopher Armstrong Campbell and Fred Clark, a former member of the Wisconsin Assembly, have announced their bids as Democrats.
