JP Cullen and the Evansville School District have been working together on projects for roughly a century. JP Cullen built an elementary school for the district in 1921 and followed up in 1940 with the construction of another school.

Sixy years later, the time had come for a large overhaul of the district’s buildings. By 2000, the Evansville School District and JP Cullen had developed a 20-year master plan calling for renovations to existing buildings, improvements to gyms, libraries and cafeterias, the expansion of athletic buildings and amenities, more energy efficiency and improvements to technology.

The final step in the 20-year master plan concerned the district’s 99-year-old middle school. In November 2018, Evansville residents approved a $34 million capital referendum allowing JP Cullen to move forward with renovating JC McKenna Middle School. The work was completed within a year, in time to ensure the building was ready for students in the 2020-21 school year.
