The Wisconsin Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced Waukesha-based Payne + Dolan was contracted for $5.73 million to improve seven miles of U.S. Highway 12 in Walworth County.

Payne + Dolan crews will resurface U.S. 12 between Wisconsin Highway 67 in and WIS 20, transportation officials said. Crews will replace a box culvert on WIS 11 between Interstate 43 and Cobb Road near Elkhorn.

Gov. Tony Evers signed off on the project and Payne + Dolan will start work May 13, officials said. Work is expected to be completed in fall 2024.

The project is split into two phases. The first phase involves the box culvert replacement on WIS 11 at Bakers Creek, then new asphalt pavement and new guardrails over the culvert. Phase one will last from mid-May to late summer.

Phase two involves resurfacing U.S. 12 between WIS 20 and the WIS 67/U.S. 12 split. Crews will reconstruct a U.S. 12 bridge over Sugar Creek, reconstruct a ramp terminal for westbound U.S. 12 to northbound WIS 67 and install new traffic signals at the County Road ES/U.S. 12 intersection.

WIS 11 will be closed to traffic between I-43 and Cobb Road for the project, officials said. There will be no access to Bakers Creek during phase one. For phase two, U.S. 12 will be closed between County A and County ES during bridge reconstruction.
