THE BLUEPRINT:
Milwaukee is looking for nominations for development projects in 2024. Submissions are open until March 1.
The city of Milwaukee Department of City Development announced the 28th annual Mayor’s Design Awards, which recognize design excellence and notable city projects.
“I am excited to celebrate 28 years of design excellence throughout the city of Milwaukee,” said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson in a statement. “These projects showcase the power of urban design to build stronger communities and move Milwaukee forward. Every year, the work of all awardees sends a message that Milwaukee is a city on the rise. I encourage everyone to nominate remarkable projects that make Milwaukee a great place to live, work and have fun,” he added.
Recipients are awarded for projects that add value to their neighborhoods by restoring, constructing or enhancing properties in a way that “respects the urban fabric and contributes to the character of their surroundings,” city officials said. Awardees can be large buildings, small storefronts and community-led public art installations, officials added.
“Milwaukee is marking another banner year for outstanding developments,” said Lafayette Crump, commissioner of the Department of City Development. “The Mayor’s Design Awards honors the continued contribution of the design, development and construction community. From vibrant corridors to meaningful public spaces, every year we celebrate the visionary minds and leaders that make Milwaukee a flourishing and prosperous city,” he added.
Members of the public and individuals and organizations involved in projects can submit nominations, officials said. Projects must be in the city of Milwaukee and must have been completed or nearly completed before Jan. 1, 2025. Winners will be honored at an in-person award ceremony in the spring.
