The glass casing around the Northwestern Mutual North Office has been completed after nearly two years of renovation in downtown Milwaukee.
Gilbane Building Co., C.G. Schmidt and Veit & Co., Inc. are leading a $500 million refresh of the 18-story Northwestern Mutual North Office near East Mason and North Cass streets. Demolition started in early 2024 and stripped the previous building down to its structural steel framework before crews built back up with a glass “skin” like the nearby Tower and Commons.
Crews took apart the exterior of the 540,000-square-foot building and expanded the floor plates to create curvature like the tower across the street. Contractors will also build a lobby and pedestrian plaza over part former Cass Street.
Over the past seven months, 218,000 square feet of glass – equal to nearly four football fields standing vertically – has been installed across 19 floors to create a sleek exterior, project officials said.
Officials said the building will be occupied in 2027.
