A renovation project in downtown Milwaukee now bears the brand of its owner.

Northwestern Mutual announced it has finished installing corporate signage on the exterior of its North Building, which has been under renovation for the last two years at East Mason and North Cass streets. Gilbane and CG Schmidt demolished the building’s exterior and encased it with a glassy façade to match the nearby Tower & Commons.

The new sign, created by Janesville-based Elevated Identity, stands around 11.5 feet tall, company officials said.

“The new Northwestern Mutual signage on our North Building is a prominent addition to the building and Milwaukee’s skyline, reflecting our continued investment in our downtown Milwaukee campus,” said Cal Schattschneider, vice president of campus and event experience and Northwestern Mutual. “As we look ahead, our teams are hard at work completing months of hands-on interior work as we work toward a 2027 opening.”

Construction on the 540,000-square-foot tower started in fall 2023 with a $500 million budget. The company wants to move its workers to the tower when it’s completed in 2027 and close its campus in Franklin, Wisconsin.
