Bernie Brewer’s new home in left field is a callback to his old abode: A German chalet equipped with a twisty slide.
Hunzinger Construction oversaw the construction of the new chalet, along the installation of signs, as part of work done to turn Miller Park into American Family Field during the pandemic.
The chalet is reminiscent of a feature of the old Milwaukee County Stadium. In that now-demolished venue, Bernie would ride a twisty slide down into a giant beer mug whenever the Brewers hit a home run.
Since the early 2000s, though, Bernie has occupied a dugout in left field.
The latest renovation project blends the two designs, keeping the 25-foot-tall, 75-foot-long twisty slide while having Bernie now slide from a chalet perched 100 feet above the field. The new chalet features a red roof – a nod to American Family Insurance’s logo – and an LED screen that displays Bernie’s celebrations whenever the Brewers score.
In addition to the chalet, the project includes a 3,600-square-foot patio space designed by Ramlow/Stein Architects. The patio offers sweeping views of the ball diamond, a full-service bar, HD TVs, and a 7-foot-tall Brewers logo built out of Miller Lite cans. The upper level of the patio features a trellis with Brewers-branded awnings and tables that would fit in at a pub. The lower tier includes half-moon tables with seating for fans.
