This project included the retrofitting of a former dormitory at the Milwaukee House of Corrections, turning it into a temporary alternate-care site serving 90 non-acute COVID-19 patients and 30 low-acute COVID-19 patients. As the project team gathered to start work on designs at the beginning of May, everyone involved was outfitted with personal protective equipment. The goal was to improve, sanitize and establish the planned temporary alternate-care site as a safe and viable place to house inmates.
Plans called for converting three open dormitory areas of about 2,500 square feet each into non-acute infectious COVID-19 patient-care centers. The project also turned one open dormitory area of about 2,500 square feet into a low-acute infectious COVID-19 patient-care center. A centralized oxygen distribution system was also provided.
Modifications were made to provide patient, correctional staff and medical staff with better air purification, window screens and access controls.
