Community input was essential in developing the new Oregon Public Library.
The 31,000-square-foot building is three times the size of the old library and has space on the first floor for hosting community events and meetings, which emerged as an important request during community listening sessions. Residents also asked for quiet and working areas for adults, which are located on the second floor.
Other library spaces include defined spaces for children, teens and adults, a makerspace, caregiver and mothers’ rooms, a play area for toddlers, self-checkout stations, a sensory area and study rooms.
“The Oregon Public Library is known as a destination for community, education and relaxation. Since its grand opening, 700 to 800 people per day have visited the library,” said Amanda Highlander, marketing manager with Tri-North Builders. “This was made possible not only by the high level of community involvement but also by making sure the building was designed with spaces that would truly create value to visitors.”
The library additionally creates connections with nature. Large windows on both floors face east overlooking a nearby park. As part of the project’s development, a path was also created between the library and the park that connects a walking and bike trail. This path even serves as a Story Walk, where small built structures feature picture books for passersby to enjoy.
“(The Story Walk) ties in with having literacy everywhere. The extension outside increased tenfold what you can do,” said Library Director Jennifer Endres Way.
In addition to holding multiple community input sessions to gather ideas for the library design and construction from residents, community members raised $2 million for the $12.5 million project.
