The Village of Germantown‘s new Department of Public Works facility addresses critical operational needs with a modern, sustainable design that ensures efficiency and future growth.
Completed in July 2024, the 141,000-square-foot facility consolidates four departments into a centralized campus, improving operations and service delivery across the community.
The project faced significant early challenges. An initial design was found to be over budget, and a proposed site proved unsuitable. GRAEF and Moore Construction Services worked together to revise the floor plans, meet space requirements and maintain budget goals. After securing a new 37-acre location, the village established a Tax Increment District to finance the project. Amid the pandemic and ongoing supply chain disruptions, Moore issued strategic bid packages to secure long-lead materials such as steel, precast components and roofing, keeping construction on schedule.
The Germantown DPW facility incorporates several state-of-the-art features, including an in-floor heating system for energy efficiency, advanced vehicle lifts for maintenance operations and an electronic card-access security system. All mechanical systems are located indoors, reducing roof penetrations and extending equipment lifespan. Sustainable practices were prioritized, including LED lighting with occupancy sensors and a brine-making system to minimize environmental impact during winter road maintenance.
Community partnerships supported the project’s success. The local fire department assisted with demolishing structures on the site, while the village provided snow removal services during construction.
Safety remained a central focus, with SiteGuard Safety conducting weekly inspections and reports throughout the build.
Delivered under the original $40 million estimate at a final cost of $38.6 million, the new facility represents a major investment in Germantown’s future. Designed to meet both current and long-term needs, the project ensures that vital public services will continue operating efficiently for generations to come.
