Milwaukee contractor to be sentenced in kickback scheme

Homer Key, a Milwaukee contractor convicted in May of felony forgery and conspiracy, will be sentenced June 10.
Key was accused of colluding with former Milwaukee County employee Freida Webb to steal federal grant money. A jury found Key not guilty of theft but decided he had helped fabricate a backdated contract in 2011 and then kicked back a portion of that money to Webb. The money, allocated to Milwaukee County by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, was intended to pay for an educational program for the owners of disadvantaged business enterprises. Webb ran the county office that oversaw that program.
Key faces a maximum of 9 ½ years in prison and $20,000 in fines.
Webb, who pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor theft charge in September in exchange for the state dropping felony charges, will be sentenced June 9. She faces a maximum sentence of nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines. Follow @bkevit
