The city of Milwaukee on Monday took media on a tour of the former Northridge Mall before Veit & Company starts complete demolition. The city took control of the mall in January through tax foreclosure and spent years in a legal battle with the former owner as trespassers and vandals painted and burned the vacant building from the inside. Veit was the winning bid for asbestos removal and demolition for nearly $11 million.

The city will keep the blue, pagoda-like structures and reuse them in a future project, said Benji Timm of the Department of City Development.
The city hopes demolition will start in late summer and to tear down all the buildings at the Northridge site.

Members of the media walk towards the building exit after the tour. HM Brandt was contracted to tear down the former Boston Store property. After complete demolition, the city expects around 50 acres will be open for redevelopment.
Some windows are shattered in the skylights hanging above the mall stores. Safety will be a priority for contractors removing asbestos from the walls and columns.
The escalator in the main foyer covered in glass and graffiti. Officials said it was difficult for first responders to move through the mall during a fire due to broken glass and lack of light at night.
