Project: Westin Milwaukee
Address: 550 N. Van Buren St., Milwaukee
Size: The 10-story hotel will include 220 hotel rooms and a 5,000-square-foot ballroom.
Start date: Late winter 2016
Estimated completion date: May 2017
Developer: Jackson Street Holdings LLC, Milwaukee
General contractor: J.H. Findorff & Son, Madison
Lead architect: Kahler Slater, Milwaukee
Significance to the region: The Westin, being built near Milwaukee’s lakefront, will be connected to the Galleria Level of the U.S. Bank Center by skywalk. The project is one of several hotels going up in the downtown area, and is also just one part of the city’s ongoing real-estate boom.
Project challenge: The building’s location in downtown Milwaukee, directly north of a busy freeway ramp, will not make the delivery of construction materials easy. Dave Beck-Engel, Findorff’s president, said accommodating busy traffic takes a great deal of planning, and is an “everyday process” for superintendents.
