The Historic Third Ward Architectural Review Board on Wednesday approved updated plans for the Foxtown Landing, a dog-friendly brewery slated for the Milwaukee River.

Mequon-based Fromm Nieman Brands pitched a three-story, 28,000-square-foot taproom and restaurant on Plankinton Avenue overlooking the river. The project will also be an extension to the Riverwalk, the city’s ongoing project for premiere waterfront access.

The architectural board, which is part of the Historic Third Ward Association, approved final plans with some conditions, confirmed Jim Plaisted, executive director of the association. The association will grant a Certificate of Appropriateness for the project, he added.

According to city records, the developer last week applied for a permit to start footing and foundation construction at 412 N. Plankinton Avenue.

Milwaukee-based Stephen Perry Smith Architects also shared new renderings for the waterfront taproom, including new street-facing facades and porch space.

In June 2023, the Milwaukee Plan Commission approved site plans and design for the taproom, including Riverwalk upgrades, pedestrian improvements and a nearby proposed dog park.

Fromm Nieman Brands is also the title sponsor for a proposed dog park next door, which has been in planning since 2021. GRAEF is designing the off-leash pet park under part of Interstate 794.

The synthetic turf park will have a 3,500-square-foot small dog run and an 18,100-square-foot large dog run, plans showed.

Milwaukee’s downtown association and the Third Ward business district pushed for the project, as they had been responsible for several public art installations and a pickleball court under the freeway.
